I ran into an acquaintance at the car wash that I haven’t seen in quite a while. He asked if I was still running and then told me that his wife’s sister had just run her first marathon. I smiled when he said that he was amazed at all the training that she had to do. He was astonished that she sometimes had to run 12 miles all in one day. I could only smile.
never makes any request regarding what food I prepare so I was taken aback when
I received an email from him linking me to the NPR site with a recipe for Chocolate
Crinkle Cookies. He wrote and asked if I would make these cookies.
I looked at the link and my first thought was that he has no idea what kind of work these cookies are. It starts off touting that the cookies are rolled in regular sugar then in confectioner’s sugar. I wondered why he asked me to make something requiring me to finely chop semisweet chocolate. I reviewed the ingredients and realized that I would have to go buy all this stuff like light corn syrup that is just going to sit in the panty forever. Then there is the whole time issue, how long is this going to take? There are so many other things I would rather do with my time. But Maurice never asks and how could I say no?
He only asked me to make cookies and to be honest I would have rather gone out and ran 12 miles in one day. That’s what makes this so interesting. I know several people who would have been excited to try out a new cookie recipe. They are the ones I call for help when I have a cooking mishap. This wouldn’t have fazed them a bit; on the other hand I know a lot of people who probably never read recipes because they are so busy running 12 miles a day. We all have our own interests and strengths and who is to say that one is more important than the other. What we do all have in common is that we all have strengths and weaknesses. I know nothing about knitting or crocheting but if you are working on a challenging project I can share your struggle and when you figure it out I can share your feeling of accomplishment, even though I know nothing about the knitting. What I do know about is doing a little more. For me it was getting together with Maurice and making these cookies. For someone else it might have been taking a walk around the block. We all start somewhere. Here we are starting a new year and I can’t help but wonder what do I want to start this year? What do I want to pursue more this year? How about you?
